To Lysand, that was more of an answer than yes or no could ever be. "I see." His tone was blank as he shoved yet another worry behind his wall. He reached over and pulled his shirt back on before re-buttoning his doublet. "Banez... How are you? If you are too tired, your report can wait for tomorrow..."

Banez' arm was fine, just still healing. His wound was again dressed as he was ordered to not stress it.
"No. Nothing can wait at this point," Banez shook his head. "I'll report to you now. What else has happened since I was gone?" Besides vampires apparently sneaking in... "I saw outside that some war preparations had already been made."

"Twenty of your soldiers returned from the mountains. We held a council of war. Brenthor has been sent to the wereanimals, and Acting Captain Cruz was sent with a small force to destroy any siege weapons coming this way. Preparations are well under way," Lysand said, waiting for Banez to be ready before heading off to his chambers. "There's still much to do... Too much to do... It seems every fifteen minutes a new report arrives on my desk, and it's becoming a challenge to keep up with it all."

Banez smiled slightly when it seemed like everyone had gotten themselves together in the face of the crisis. In spite of the fact that only twenty soldiers had lived after the battle at Tiaelde. Twenty... he felt completely ashamed, even though there had been no way of knowing. He pulled on his tunic before he started making his way after Lysand, not sure what else to say.

Lysand shifted slightly at Banez's silence, but he did nothing to break it, just ushering the captain into his chambers and closing the door behind them. He moved to his desk, clearing it off and retrieving a clean sheet of paper. "I need to know everything that happened."

Banez entered Lysand's chambers and waited for him to pull out a clean sheet of paper. At the question, the captain racked his brain for every pained detail, and he told Lysand the whole story of what he saw and heard at the mountain, from the lack of wereanimals, to the traps in the mountains, the explosive ammo of the siege weapons, the vampire general, and Travis' assistance, continuing even to the vampire pursuers at Travis' cabin, and the fact that a fellow werewolf thought that the disappearance of her pack was strange.

Lysand wrote each and every word the guard captain said down, handwriting losing its usual neat grace as his hand sped across the pages to keep up with him. He found that, as he set his quill down on the last word, his hand was shaking. He stared at it, uncomprehending for few moments before he lowered it to press against the desk. "Banez... How can you be so strong? For all this to happen to you, yet now you stand before me, quite sane. How? How can you manage it?"

Banez shifted a bit at Lysand's question. He knew how to answer, since new recruits tended to ask it, but he wondered if the political figure would understand. "You just... try not to think about it too much. And you try not to blame yourself." And chalk it up to God, but why would God allow such a thing to happen?

Lysand considered the answer for a long while. Not think about it... Wasn't shoving things away behind a wall something that he did nearly everyday? He raised a hand to rub at his eyes for a moment. "It's hard not to think of these things sometimes, when they lay so close to you." He raked a hand through his hair, staring at him with weary eyes. He stood to work off some of his nerves, which made a slight tremble work its way through his body.

"It is," Banez agreed quietly. He watched Lysand stand from his desk, noticing just how well-put-together a mess he looked like. The captain stepped forward and around the desk, bringing his arms around Lysand again in a more encompassing hug. With all the misfortune plaguing them and all the kingdom, he just focused on the gentle act. If he didn't, he might just break.

Lysand swallowed, cosing his eyes as he clung to the guard captain. "It's too much," he murmured quietly. "Too much." He looked up at him. "I haven't been able to sleep for more than an hour or to at a time." He was quiet a moment, face flushing for a brief moment as he thought about what he admitted to Banez before he left. "I can't survive on that much for much longer. Could you... stay withe me tonight?"

An hour or two? That wasn't good. "Of course I will. Whatever you need," Banez answered. Then it would be back to running around the castle, preparing for a vampire attack. The captain heaved a sigh, taking his focus off of that. He noticed Lysand flushing again, and his previous confusion returned. Maybe it was just the idea? Because they weren't doing anything wrong by it....

"Thank you Banez," Lysand replied quietly. He leaned into the captain for a moment, relishing in the safe feeling that the other's arms gave him. "We'll make it through this... We have to." His muscles were tense- they always were lately- and his arms tightened around the other unconsciously. He peered up at him. "The kingdom will be safe... There's just... No other option." His muscles trembled a moment as he tried to believe the words he had just uttered.

"It will be safe. We'll spare no expense, and overlook nothing," Banez said, patting Lysand's back. The captain guided them over to the bed, to sit down next to Lysand. "Let's just... not think about it for right now. But how is Lorin doing?" He would have to talk to the prince later about an escape plan, in case things really did go horribly wrong, but Lysand was a good place to start.

"He was shaken, by the vampire. We all were of course." Lysand was quiet a moment as he looked up at the captain. "He had his knife to my throat at one point. In that moment... I was certain that I was going to die." Yet he was still here. "Lorin seems sane enough, but still unhappy. I had to... lie to him. I had to tell him that Brenthor was watching out for him. But Banez... Brenthor wants Lorin dead." The thought of that meeting with Brenthor caused him to shudder and he raised the back of his hand to his lips as if trying to rub that particular memory away.
