"I simply informed him of the true cause, and he attacked me." Brenthor's eyes narrowed. There was no way the blame was being pinned onto him! "If I may be frank, Captain, Lysand is the high advisor. If he can't handle the truth, then perhaps he shouldn't be in the position that he's in."

Banez glanced to Lysand, allowing the sympathy to show on his face at the risk of Brenthor tearing him apart for taking sides out of pity. "And what was the true cause?" Banez asked delicately, thinking that he could imagine something along the lines of what happened, but not entirely sure if it was correct to assume. He threw an annoyed look Brenthor's way, "The validity of Lysand's position is not something for me to decide, Brenthor. That's something for the.. the prince to decide," he said, having to remind himself of the king's status.

"Hurm Brenthor," Lysand managed to spit out. He slowly turned around, his lips in a horizontal line, but his face still red. "The bastard killed my father and then lived out the rest of his life as the new head advisor." And then Brenthor took him in and then... His head spun. Was it all apart of Hurm Brenthor's plan? He had thought Brenthor stabbing him in the back had happened because it was convenient for him. Was it all planned from the beginning?

"I would appreciate if you would refrain talking about my father like that," Brenthor said dryly. There was nothing else for him to add, but he had to fight to keep himself from smiling at the pure misery on Lysand's face.

It had to take all of Banez' power not to comfort Lysand right there. Instead, he raked his hand through his hair. Telling Lysand that his father was murdered by your own kin was productive to the meeting HOW? And it wasn't as though Banez bought for a second that Brenthor genuinely wanted to tell him the truth for the sake of making up and moving on. Provocation indeed... "I think this meeting is over. It might be best if you retired for the day, Brenthor." And don't come out! The lack of an extra meal would do him good, anyway.

Lysand kept his back straight, head still spinning. He managed to get three words out to agree with Banez. "Get out Brenthor." His hands tightened and he took a deep breath. Today was not a good day to be Lysand. He bit his lip, before forcing his face into complete neutrality. Mrph. He wasn't sure whether he should be thankful that Banez intervened or annoyed that he stopped him before silencing the ambassador for good.

"Tch." Brenthor raised his chin. "Very well. Good day to you, advisor." And by good day, he meant 'Go die in a hole!' He strode from the room, a self-satisfied smirk on his face. He had shaken him. He knew he did, and that was something worth smiling for.

Thank God. At some point, the captain was sure that his patience with that man was going to stop short, and heaven help that man when it came to the point that Banez' hand was not stayed. Brenthor's wrist might be broken next time. He sighed heavily before he went to close the door behind the ambassador. Good riddance. He turned back to Lysand. "Do you need anything?"

Lysand turned toward Banez slowly. "Not unless you're actually a seer and you never told me," he replied bitterly. He thought for a moment.Would Brenthor try to poison him as well? He wondered if this would be seen as paranoid, but... "Banez, how guarded is the food from the castle kitchens?"

"As guarded as you need them to be," Banez replied, making his way back to the advisor. But practically anything that Lysand needed to hear, the captain would say. Brenthor had crossed a line and then some by dropping that; a seed like that was one of those things that could drive less stable men to madness. "Lysand, I'm... really sorry." He started to gesture with his arms for a moment, but disregarded that action to bring his arms around Lysand. The advisor was a stickly thing, but Banez' armor protected him from the boniness this time.

"Banez..." Lysand's cheeks flushed slightly as he was hugged, not used to such actions. His lips pressed into a thin line. He decided to share his thoughts, for whatever reason. It may end up being a mistake, but... "Brenthor was the one who took me in after my father died. If his father was the one that killed my father then I can't help but wonder if it was all planned out from the beginning. How far in advance was his plan created? And how far does it reach, i wonder? For all I know I could be snared in it right now."

Banez frowned, but didn't pull back from the hug to continue the discussion, "But you're the head advisor now. If this plan was made to ensure Alerick's success, then it isn't a very good plan." But it would explain Brenthor's general anger and scorn. "But why would he take you in afterward? That doesn't make sense to me. I mean, you're acting independent of him, so if his plan was to turn you into a puppet, then that failed, too. He's not any better off with you in this position than with any other random advisor."

The fact that Banez's simple logic made more sense to him than his panicked political senses made Lysand want to face palm. "You're right. I guess this is all just a shock for me. For so many years I just thought it was the consumption. But now to think that my father was murdered and that I was a target from the very beginning... It nearly worked too... If Brenthor hadn't made one fatal misstep, I would probably still be under his control today. I just wish I could understand why me." He made to take s light step backwards, pushing lightly against the captain's arms.

Banez let his arms drop to his sides. Right, right, Lysand wasn't a very huggy person. "I understand. That was a terrible way to find out..." He paused, wondering if asking would be too much for the advisor right now. Well, maybe if he was a bit less direct about it... "Do you want to talk about it?"

"I'm not usually one to talk about personal matters, Captain," Lysand replied quietly. "I don't know... I probably just need some sleep. Talking about things... It doesn't change anything, so I don't see how it would help. The last time I confided in someone... They used it all against me." He strode forward a moment, lips pressing into a line. Some of Brenthor's earlier words echoed in his mind. "Banez." He focused on a spot on the wall. "I need you to be honest with me... Is there any part of you that-" he struggled to find the way he wanted to put this. "That befriended me because of my political position?"
