There was something in the advisor's eyes that made him want to shudder and avert his gaze, but Tobias forced his expression to remain neutral. He couldn't stop the slight tremble when the man first stared into his face, however. "Yes, I've been told that I am the mirror image of my father." He rather wished the man would stop staring at him like that, but he had no choice but to meet his gaze. "I thank you for the condolences, sir. They mean much to me. I know that you were close to my father."

"Yes. Your father was perhaps the best friend I ever had." A lie, but the son wouldn't know that. Brenthor released his chin, continuing to eye the young man a moment before speaking. "I trust that Alerick informed you of your new position. You are to become my scribe. I expect you to be in my chambers each morning by the toll of the first morning bell."
As if Tobias would be able to get himself up that early. The morning bell tolled only fifteen minutes after sunrise. Alerick watched the young man, wondering how his father would punish him for being late.

Tobias gave a short nod. "Yes Advisor. I understand. I will make sure to be there." That was going to be irritating. He would have to get up well before sunrise in order to be presentable. Well at least this was a start of something. Although, he wasn't quite certain how much political gain he would get from being a scribe... He would attend meetings, he supposed, and maybe would get noticed that way...

"Very good. I trust you'll perform t the best of your abilities. I would expect nothing less from a Lysand." Brenthor eyed him coolly for a moment before turning. "I'll be taking my leave now." He strode from the room as abruptly as he had burst in.
Alerick watched him go. Well it was nice seeing his father... He supposed. He turned to Tobias. "This is only your first position. I'll help you with some new positions soon. Maybe in a few years you'll be a minor advisor like myself."

Tobias felt the nervous tension rush out of him as the high advisor left the room. Well then... He inhaled before exhaling again. He turned to look at Alerick as the man spoke and he nodded. "Thank you, Alerick. This means a lot to me. I'm in your debt, surely... Even if it does mean having to get up early."

"You handled my father better than I thought you would," Alerick commented, glancing to the door. "Most people are fairly intimidated by him." Including Alerick himself, but Tobias didn't need to know that. The fact that he hadn't reacted too badly... Perhaps that was a sign of the political prowess his father swore this Lysand would have....

"Yes, well..." Tobias gave a light shrug. "My father drilled into me that when you're around a politician like that, you can't show your emotions at all. We actually spent time, working on how I present myself. It's a good thing too. I wouldn't want your father to know how much he intimidated me."

"Tch." Alerick looked at him for a moment. "You're hardly the cold emotionless type, Tobias. You show your emotions around me all the time. Or do I not count as a politician?" He raised his eyebrows, crossing his arms.

Tobias blinked, surprised that he would ask such a question. He rather thought the answer was obvious. "You're not a politician, Alerick." There was a slight pause before he continued. "You're a friend."

Alerick stared at him a moment, a slight bit of shock in his eyes. It as more of the way he said it; the simple earnesty of the statement rather than the statement itself. Friends...
"Friends mean nothing to a politician, Alerick. Nothing. They are simply there either to use you, or for you to use them. I want you to keep your distance from those inferior to you, do you understand? You have no friends son. If you do, then you are weak."
His father's words echoed through his head a moment, followed by Tobias'. He stared at the boy for a few moments, a strange emotion coming to his eyes before he abruptly turned and strode away. A friend...

"Alerick?" Tobias tilted his head to the side as the man just turned and walked away. Well then... That was certainly strange. What was that in his eyes just then?
He only thought about it a moment more before his stomach growled, jarring him from his thoughts. He needed breakfast... Or lunch, really. Working for Hurm Brenthor... This was going to be interesting, wasn't it?
Still, he owed a lot to the Brenthors. He was going to have to do everything that he could to make up for it.
