Banez gently closed the door behind him, looking to the priest up at the altar. He smiled to the man as Lysand explained why they were there. But who first? That was a good question. Probably Lysand, before he lost his nerve and left before anyone could catch him. "You go first," he said to the advisor. "I'll be right here."

Urf.
Lysand swallowed and entered the confessional, choosing to sit behind the wall; he couldn't face the priest. He just couldn't. After saying the traditional prayer, it all came out. The lies, the forgeries, and the murders. There was a silence for a moment before he asked, "Father... Can I ask for forgiveness for something I haven't done yet?"
"Advisor, if you are going to ask for repentance for a future sin, don't you think it best that you don't do it?"
Lysand bit his lip. "I don't think I'm going to mean to do it, but... I think it's inevitable."
"... Fine. Then what is it?"
"Betraying a friend."
It was sometime later that Lysand emerged, with orders to complete the rosary and say five Hail Mary's. He worried that Banez would have fallen asleep with all the time he had been in there.

Banez waved to Lysand, for all the luck it would grant him. It might take a while, he realized. Filing quietly into a bench, the captain sat down carefully and clasped his hands together in front of him. After reciting what major prayers he knew, he was left to meander in his thoughts.
So… where to begin? “I know I haven’t been here in a while… Ever since I was promoted, I’ve been busy, but that’s no excuse…” He sighed.
“My mother and father, I know that they’re in a better place, and sometimes we didn't get along, but bless their souls. And Osmond… I hope he’s there with you. He was a good man.” The captain breathed deeply, letting his forehead rest on his laced hands. At the very least, the knight that he had squired didn’t suffer from his injuries for very long. …Now he craved peaches… The memory of a bitten peach transferred from one gauntleted hand to his own came to mind before he shook his head lightly. “My brothers, my sister, and their children, I only hope that the best comes to them.” He straightened himself again, since the big favors were coming up now.
“I don’t know if you can keep Lysand from worrying… Just don’t let him worry himself sick, and help heal his wounds. And… I can’t say I understand the way you do things, but please forgive him. He really does regret it, and I don’t want to see him in turmoil. He’s a good person, just caught up in a lot of… well, unpleasant things.” Next big one: “Look after Prince Lorin. He’s so troubled with his life, and I wish I could do more, but I can’t. And he’s so young; I’m afraid that people will take advantage of his inexperience. Help point him in the right direction and help him grow.” Who else? …. He took a breath, “And… if you could nudge Brenthor to turn around… I mean, you don’t have to do all the work; if I saw some signs, I would try to help with that, too.”
"And if you could point me in the right direction also, I'd be forever grateful," he said, knowing that surely God knew what he was talking about. Finally, Lysand came out of the confession box, and Banez looked over from his prayer. His turn, then? He offered Lysand a hopeful smile as he stood up from the pew.

Lysand tried to smile back as he moved out of the way so that the guard captain could enter. The priest had remained in his seat, waiting.
Lysand moved to kneel on one the pews. He couldn't actually do the rosary at this time, being that he hadn't taken one with him, but he decided that he could do that when he returned o his chambers. Instead, he completed the five Hail Mary's.
"God... I wish that you could make things clear to me. Who to trust and who to not that is. Can I even trust anyone? For awhile I thought that I could, but now..." He smiled grimly. "I am only a man. A man with a lot on his shoulders. The kingdom... Please God. Help me protect this kingdom. Help me bring it in the right direction... I can't do this alone anymore! If this is your way of testing me, then... Then surely I've failed." His eyes squeezed shut as his wounds gave a painful twinge. He took a calming breath. "Protect those going to Tialade. They have a dangerous task coming to them. If Banez should fall in those mountains, lead him to your Angel Haven. If there isn't one, would it be too much to ask of you that you create one just for him?"
The advisor looked up and sat back in the pew, looking just as confused as he felt. In truth he both wanted to pray for and damn that captain. But he couldn't bring himself to do the latter. Even if Banez had tried to have him assassinated... He just couldn't.

Banez went into the confessional and sat face to face with the priest. "Bless me Father, for I have sinned... It's been nine years since my last confession." Not a very good record... He said the standard prayer before opening up the sin basket.
"I've killed many men in the name of war, but I didn't enjoy it. It.. might not be fair to confess that... I'm just going repeat the sin eventually in another war." He could probably talk to priest's ear off concerning his conflict, but he had better keep digging down the basket. "I.. suggested murdering someone. I feel horrible about it, and I'm not going to do it. I've sworn the Lord's name... more than a few times. I haven't gone to mass in a fair amount of time. I have.. taken books from the library without checking them out, but I mean to return them." Other little sins, mostly venial, were admitted in the confessional, before Banez paused. "And Father... some years ago, when things weren't.. going as smoothly for me, I had... considered killing myself." He glanced down, making a conscious effort to not pick at the strap around him. "I never tried, but I had imagined it over and over how I would." He finally waited for the priest to speak.

"God will forgive you, Captain," the priest said calmly. "If you are truly repentant, he will forgive." He was quiet a moment, thinking about the guard captain's last confession. "You must remember that even during your darkest hour, the Lord is still with you. He would never abandon you, so you must never abandon Him or yourself." After a moment he added, "After this I suggest you complete the rosary."
Lysand shifted in the pew, his eyes focused on the cross ahead. His chest twinged, causing him to let out a small gasp. Urf... He was warned that stress would cause him more pain, but how could that even be avoided? Closing his eyes he drew in a deep breath, hoping that Banez would emerge soon.

Banez nodded and finally smiled slightly. A whole rosary... "Thank you, Father. I'll remember that." He stood up, leaving the confession box and seeing that Lysand looked like he was idling. "Do you want to go now?" he asked. Banez wouldn't mind staying around for a little while, himself.

Lysand glanced at him before staring at the cross again. "Unless you have some other business here," he replied. He really had no reason to hang around in the cathedral. "I should probably get back shortly... I need liquor." For the pain. Among other things. "Perhaps... You'd like to join me." He wasn't sure if he actually wanted Banez to take him up on that offer.

He could probably pray more if he tried, but he didn't have any other urgent business in the cathedral. "I'll go back with you, then." At Lysand's offer, Banez grinned. "Of course! You still owe me for having me travel with Brenthor." And the advisor had better not spoil the surprise of what drink he had in store! "Can you get up alright?" the captain asked, standing by to offer a hand if necessary.

"Yes, I'm quite fine, Captain. Really." Lysand pushed himself up, wincing slightly. "Let's just get back... I've already had some sent up to my chambers." He was supposed to be taking it in small quantities to help him sleep, but if he wanted to use it all in one night, why not? /That/ would certainly help him sleep, right? He began heading out of the cathedral.

Banez felt the decline to be a little much, but he let Lysand get up on his own. "Alright," he said, walking out of the cathedral with the advisor. Naturally, they were all cleansed and pure, so the first thing they needed to do was indulge themselves in alcohol! But the captain was more than willing to admit that he was human, and he'd rather not have Lysand drink himself into a stupor alone.
