For the longest time after he awoke with a scream, he could not move, his muscles paralyzed with fear and his breath coming in quick gasps. He could not remember the nightmare entirely, only that there were constantly moving shadows, but he certainly remembered the ending- a pack of vampires descending upon him. Raising a hand, he pressed it to his neck, as if to check for bite marks.
He took another few breaths before he got up and lit a candle. He sat down, staring at the flame for a moment, but the moving shadows on the wall made him flinch. Getting up, he moved to his door and ducked out it, deciding that a walk would do well to calm his nerves. He kept his head turned away from the guard stationed outside his room in shame. He was a grown man. Such things as nightmares shouldn't bother him so...
He let his legs wander wherever they felt like taking him, and before long, he found himself standing in front of Banez's quarters. His hand rested on the door knob for a moment. Was it unlocked? He wasn't entirely sure what made him decide to find out, but with a quick turn of the knob, he suddenly found himself in the man's room. Still trembling slightly, he moved forward into the room, eyes falling on the guard captain as his chest rose and fell quietly. He was sleeping then... A shiver ran up his spine before he moved to the bed and gently laid himself beside the man, hoping not to wake him.

God only knew what Banez was dreaming of, but the captain appeared to be in a peaceful rest. Maybe he was dreaming of Angel Haven, or playing checkers indoors on a rainy day, or that he was a puppy. Whatever he was dreaming of, it slowly melted away when he felt the bed shift as another person seemed to get in. Who? Banez' eyeslids slowly opened, and he rolled onto his back and turned his head to the second person now in his bed. Things still seemed mildly blurry in his lazy half-dream state, and the darkness didn't help, but he recognized the small, thin form next to him. "Lysand?" he called quietly.

Lysand flinched slightly at the sound of Banez's voice. He could not help but flush as he wondered just what the guard captain was thinking right now. He drew a breath as he forced his nerves to smooth. "I hadn't meant to wake you," he replied quietly. Of course the question now became; just what exactly had he been trying to do then? "Your door was unlocked," he was quick to explain. "So I just... I hope you don't mind..."

Banez looked at Lysand, but whether or not he was focusing and listening was the question. But he caught the last question, and he smiled slightly. "I don't mind." In fact, Lysand there might help him sleep better, even if Brenthor wasn't around to harass him. Banez settled back, turning to face Lysand, "You feelin' okay?"

Lysand was on his back, but on Banez's assurance that it was okay, he turned over to face him. His eyes didn't focus on his face for a moment as he asked him if he was alright. He closed his eyes and drew a breath, trying to assess himself. Soon coming up with the answer, he opened his eyes and gave his head a slow shake. His answer was quiet, and there was a tinge of shame to it. "No..."

Banez frowned with concern. He brought his arms around Lysand, holding the advisor close and rubbing his back comfortingly. "What's wrong?" A nightmare? Or the stress of everything that was going on, he figured. It was hard for even the captain to feel just 'okay' lately.

Lysand hid his face in the captain's chest, causing it to flush. He was so warm... His arms went around the captain as he clung to him. He squirmed at his own vulnerability. How he despised it. Sometimes he even despised Banez for dragging it out of him. However, there was no way he could shove it all behind his wall any longer. He trembled for a few moments before he spoke, words muffled by Banez's chest, but still audible. "I'm scared. I had another nightmare... One that I wasn't able to push away as being impossible."

Lysand's face pressed into his thin shirt, and Banez gently kissed the top of his head, where his hair naturally parted. As Lysand's arms encircled him, he noticed how bony the advisor still was, even with the slight cushioning of muscle. Still shaking off the last remnants of sleep, he had to listen closely, but he caught enough of Lysand's words to understand. "Do you want to talk about it?"

"Maybe," Lysand replied quietly, still reluctant. But whatever wall he had tried building up again was broken by the kiss. "Yes." It was hard to know where to start. He wasn't one who spoke of his emotions often. "I dreamed of shadows flitting to and fro, shapeless yet menacing all the same. They surrounded me, and I turned to run. That's when... He showed up. The vampire that attacked me in the castle. He didn't say anything, just raising a hand and pointing at me. That's when they fell upon me; a pack of vampires, grabbing at me, fighting over who got to rip out my throat."

Banez' eyes filled with worry as Lysand recounted his nightmare. That vampire... Banez would like to know who he was, so he could hack the monster into pieces for making Lysand so distraught. "That won't happen. I'll never let it happen to you," Banez said gently. Talk of vampires... it just reminded him of his fight with the vampire general. The knight managed to keep his face neutral for Lysand, but then he shivered just lightly.

"Thank you, Banez..." Lysand didn't miss the shiver; how could he when they were so close, after all? He shifted slightly, arms, tightening around the man as he shifted, moving to rest his chin on his shoulder. "It must just be the stress that's getting me," he mumbled. "I know that you wouldn't let them hurt me." He wanted to somehow comfort Banez, but found himself at a loss, being that his current state didn't lend itself well to comforting others. His own hands moved down the other's back for a moment. "God will keep us safe." The words had a bitter aftertaste; God seemed to be doing nothing but working against them so far.

Banez had kept word of God off his tongue for the same reason. Before all this, Banez was certain that God would help the good, but now... now he was beginning to think that God helped those that helped themselves. But even in the worst case scenario, they had a chance to escape through the tunnels; it wasn't hopeless. "We'll be alright," he said, to assure both Lysand and himself, muscles relaxing as the other's hands slid down his back. "And then we'll... figure things out." 'Things' including the werefolk, the remaining vampires, Lorin's despair, Brenthor's plots, and, of course, the two of them.

"Mmm." He allowed his cheek to rest against the side of his neck. "We will be... If the nightmares don't end up killing me first that is." His eyes dimmed slightly at the thought, and he shifted slightly, just to feel Banez's arms around him. So warm... Almost too warm, actually. It was tempting for him just to slide out of his shirt right then and there, but he didn't, content to just stay in his arms. His hands slid up again, resting on his shoulder blades.

"You could always stay with me," Banez offered. "There's no shame in that." Maybe the guards outside would start thinking that something funny was going on... but it wasn't as though they'd have to lie. Lysand was just having trouble sleeping, and there was a lot going on, after all. He stroked Lysand's hair, almost looking like he was half-asleep again. It felt nice just to have someone there next to him.

"Wouldn't there be... whispers?" Lysand asked hesitantly. Although, he certainly couldn't deny the allure... But there was something else he had to consider as well. The words were on the tip of his tongue, however he was reluctant to say them. "Such an arrangement... It wouldn't... Be more hurtful to us in the end, would it?" He pulled back to look him in the eyes, hands resting on his shoulders. To be so close to each other every night, but to be able to go no farther...
